On behalf of Halifax Regional Municipality, we are currently recruiting for a Manager, Solid Waste Resources.
Reporting to the Director, Transportation & Public Works, the Manager, Solid Waste Resources is responsible for developing strategy and providing strong operational oversight for Halifax’s solid waste management system. As the Manager, Solid Waste Resources, you will ensure the effective integration of Halifax’s residential collection services, processing plant partnerships, diversion planning and public education programs. In this role, you will develop and lead innovative solutions and industry best practices that will enable HRM to remain a national leader in solid waste, recycling and composting. Working closely with Council and the HRM leadership team, you will prepare and implement the annual Solid Waste business plan and steward the $40 million operating budget and $20 million capital budget. Managing a small team, you will negotiate and oversee a number of multi-year operating contracts. You will also lead facility acquisition and replacement. Providing strong fiscal oversight, you will maximize cost recovery and waste stewardship activities for the benefit of the municipality. You will also be responsible for maintaining and securing relationships with vendors and identifying opportunities for innovation and efficiencies within our industry.
As the ideal candidate, you have a post-secondary degree in Business Administration, Public Administration, Engineering, or an equivalent combination of education and experience. You are a proven strategic leader and a respected hands-on operational manager possessing over 5 years experience within a complex environment. Experience in the waste management sector would be considered an asset. You are adept at negotiating and developing large scale contracts. With strong business, financial and political acumen, you effectively lead operational strategy, budgeting and planning activities. Having shown an aptitude for building strong relationships with internal and external stakeholders, including industry and community partners, you are able to lead by influence and gain buy-in. An effective communicator and achievement-oriented individual, you will champion the evolution of Halifax’s solid waste management system and play a key role in leading the City towards a sustainable future.
