Health Association Nova Scotia is a not-for-profit, non-government, membership-based association with almost 60 years’ experience in providing exceptional human resource shared services, innovative clinical engineering solutions, policy support and expertise our customers can count on. Serving more than 130 organizations from across the province of Nova Scotia, our core fee-for-service programs are Clinical Engineering Services, Labour Relations and Compensation Analysis, Group Benefits Solutions and Shared Financial Services.
A dynamic new role, Legal Counsel, has been created in the Group Benefits Solutions (GBS) Service. GBS offers a broad range of Employee Benefit Plans, including Group Life, Health, Dental, a self-insured Long Term Disability Plan (assets of approximately $191M), and a menu of optional benefits. We currently provide benefits to over 40,000 health care employees and retirees, making us the largest provider of benefits in Nova Scotia’s health system.
Reporting to the Director, Group Benefits Solutions, you will be responsible for providing legal representation, advice and other related services to the HANS Legal Trust for the Long Term Disability Plan. These include, but are not limited to, acting as legal counsel for the plan on matters and disputes arising from the administration of claims including preparation of legal briefs, discoveries, settlement conferences, mediations, and subrogation files; legal representation of the HANS LTD Trust in court proceedings; consultation and assistance in the LTD plan text (contract) interpretation as well as drafting changes; and conducting legal research and preparing reports and presentations as requested.
As the ideal candidate, you have proven negotiation skills and a demonstrated ability to develop and maintain strong, trustworthy working relationships and contribute to client satisfaction. You are also a practicing lawyer in good standing of the Nova Scotia Barristers’ Society or eligible for membership; have a minimum of 5 years’ legal experience with in-depth knowledge of disability management and disability insurance, OH&S legislation, workplace practices and overall labour and employment issues.
